Jhum improvement
Contour bunding on slopes; 5+ year fallow cycle; hedgerow intercropping with nitrogen-fixing shrubs (alder, Crotalaria, Tephrosia). Avoid burning during dry, windy weather.
Ginger cultivation
Seed treatment mandatory: dip rhizomes in Mancozeb 0.3% + Trichoderma for 30 min before planting. Raised beds 25–30 cm high, 1 m wide. Spacing: 25 × 20 cm. Mulch with 10–12 t/ha green leaves at planting, repeat at 60 days. Fertiliser: NPK 75:50:50 kg/ha + FYM 25 t/ha. Crop rotation — do not replant ginger in the same field for at least 2–3 years.
Turmeric
Similar to ginger — raised beds, same seed treatment. Longer maturity: 8–9 months. Boil harvested rhizomes 45–60 min, then sun-dry 10–15 days. Polish mechanically for better market price.
King Chilli (Umorok)
GI-tagged crop. Virus-free saplings from certified nursery only. Raised nursery March–April. Transplant May–June at 60 × 60 cm. Stake plants at 30–45 days. Harvest Aug–Nov (5–6 pickings). Do not grow chilli after chilli — rotate with maize or millets.
Large Cardamom
Spacing: 2 × 2 m under shade trees. Apply FYM 10 kg/plant + NPK 75:75:150 g/plant per year in two splits (March and July). Mulch with dry leaves in November–December. Only plant virus-free suckers from certified nurseries.
